  
 
“Nippon Cinema Classics” represents Japanese classic masterpieces. This year seven films are selected including a silent movie in 1920s and two ATG (Nihon Art Theater Guild) films in 1970s under the theme of “nostalgia for home”.

A Diary Of Chuji's Travels

This legendary silent period masterpiece was a trilogy that has been lost for over 50 years, and moviegoers used to say that it was gone forever. Fortunately however, some portions of second part and most of third part were found in 1990s. This showing brings back the past in an abbreviated form by connecting the discovered segments.
The wanderer, Chuji Kunisada (Okouchi), who was always on the side of the common folks, is being chased by the followers of a feudal lord. And to make thing worse he is sick and getting sicker. . . . Chuji is caught between a rock and the hard place; what will become of him?!

Keisuke Kinoshita directed this first full-color film in Japan.
Carmen (Takamine) is a stripper who comes back to her hometown at the base of Mt. Asama with her buddy Maya (Kobayashi). Their flashy clothes and daring behavior creates a firestorm in the calm village. Can they put on a strip show for the villagers to commemorate Carmen’s return?! Hideko Takamine, in a role unlike that seen in any of her other films, is lively minx, singing and dancing in this popular comic idyll.

With a few yakuza guys from Tokyo that he finds in the village, Tetsuo plans to take advantage of a blind girl Yuki (Nakagawa) who is attracted to him by selling her into prostitution . . .
The stormy Japan Seascapes and the melancholy tone of the Tsugaru shamisen is representative of Japan Art Theater Guild (ATG) style.

Based on an original story by Yojiro Ishizaka, this well-made drama is set in a
Christian school in a beautiful northern harbor town.
Teacher Mazaki (Obinata) speaks up for Keiko, one of the girls at the school, every time she causes problems because he feels sorry for her, a child born out of wedlock. Sumi (Natsukawa), one of Mazaki’s colleagues and who is secretly in love with him, strongly disagrees with him about Keiko. Then Sumi hears a rumor that Keiko is pregnant with Mazaki's child . . . .

Known for his skillful realism, Tadashi Imai filmed Tsutomu Mizukami's novel by the same name.
A native of Echigo, Gonsuke (Mikuni), is working far from home, and envies his countryman Tomekichi (Ozawa) for his excellent reputation at work and his beautiful wife. Called back to his hometown when his mother falls seriously ill, Gonsuke is driven with lust and rapes Tomekichi’s wife, Oshin (Sakuma).
Set in Oyashirazu as winter changed into spring, the enmity between the two men leads them and the woman tossed between the two to their irreversible fate.

Toichiro Narushima, who first achieved prominence as cameraman, made his directorial debut with this film.
Minoru (Tamura) visits his home on Okinoerabu island for the first time in thirty years. Seeing the old man (Fujiwara) who used to be in love with his mother, Minoru recalls the old days spent on the island with his young, beautiful mother (Kaku).
A moving piece depicts the bond between a star-crossed mother and her child, set in a huge expanse of blue sky and sea.
